Royal elections!

As people well know, Artifakt is the Belgian branch of the International Steampunk Objective. 
Now the founders of the SPO, Ezekiel and FairyIna, are one of the two finalist couples in the royal elections of the upcoming edition of Elfia Arcen. 

For those that really would love to see a steampunk couple "rule" the fair, you can help making this happen quite easily, providing you're attending the event. 
IF you are and you can make it in time, go to the Elfo stage on Saturday, September 20th at 11.30am. And vote for Ezekiel and FairyIna. Simple as that really :)

Radio Modern on the national holiday - 21.7.2014

On Monday the 21st of July Belgium celebrated it's national holiday.
Vive le royaume (long live the kingdom) and all that Jazz.

Artifakt went and celebrated in style, but going to Bal Populaire with Radio Modern, the House of Swing in Mechelen.
Ok so Radio Modern is technically dieselpunk era, but that just proves once again that we of Artifakt don't discriminate against other forms of 'punk than steampunk ;)

Event announcement: D.E.S.C.

What: The Dutch European Steampunk Convention, or D.E.S.C. for short
What: We at Artifakt like to think that the name of the event is self-explanatory :P

For the second year in a row, The Steampunk Objective (mainly their Dutch main chamber) is joining forces with FantasiaFest to host D.E.S.C. an event to bring together European (and steampunks from outside Europe too of course, everyone's welcome!) steampunks and dieselpunks for 4 days of camping, merriment and the fantasy fair (FantasiaFest) right next door!
You'll be able to encounter fellow 'punks from several countries, shop, enjoy good food, good drinks and good company. For those with children, it's a child friendly convention, so you're welcome to bring the little ones!

Japan Expo is not only THE European Japanese culture convention, as it is held in France, at easy to reach distance from Paris, it is also a place where steampunks tend to gather.
Not only people dressing in 'punk fashions, but also vendors, steampunk computer games and manga are present.

Last weekend it was not only International Steampunk Day (on Saturday) but it was also FantastyVal (on both Saturday and Sunday) in a small rural town in the Netherlands.
Even though it's a fantasy fair, the Steampunk Objective had set up camp, and two members of Artifakt dropped in for a visit on Sunday.

14.6.2014 - International Steampunk Day meet in Antwerp.

Last Saturday it was, as everyone well knows by now, International Steampunk Day.
Artifakt could of course not pass up the opportunity to meet up :)

Event review: TEDxFlanders salon - Save the internet

You may wonder why we’re talking about this particular event on this here blog.
The reason is simple: without even delving into the realms of politics, net neutrality affects us all, including steampunks and dieselpunks, as let’s face it, a large portion of our community IS happening online.
We rely on forums, facebook pages, blogs, website, and so on to get information, arrange meetings, find events to attend, find tutorials to help us in our latest creative venture and so on.
Much as we are retrofuturistic, we are also children of the current age, and the internet IS an important part of it.

Therefore we attended TEDxFlanders’ salon about net neutrality, where we could get more information about what the people are doing to keep the internet active and accessible like it is today.

The beautiful thing about TEDx events (which are global, just do a google search to see what’s happening near you) is that they aren’t politically loaded. They aim to spread ideas, to encourage creativity. To give you the information so you can make up your own mind, and possibly get ideas for new things.

Also: if you can’t attend their events, they upload relevant information afterwards, which allows people to (re)view it later.
So if you worry about your project being online, check them out for sure.

h.NAOTO STEAM - Steampunk fashion from Japan

That steampunk is a rising star on the Japanese fashion scene is something that's been quite known for a good while now.
More and more Japanese are interested in the momevement, or elements thereoff, and it's starting to show quite regularly.

First of all there is the Tokyo based steampunk ensemble Strange Artifact, the band that comes with their own steampunk accessories label Poorman's Gold Label.
A brand that is not only for sale at their concerts or whenever the band gets a stand at things such as Design Festa or ArtisM Market events, but also in select stores throughout the city.

Secondly there are the regular steampunk events, SteamGarden.

And thirdly, big name brands, mostly street fashion ones, have picked up on steampunk on a regular basis.
Especially lolita brands have hopped on the band wagon quite regularly, especially brands such as Alice and the Pirates; Metamorphose, Temps de Fille and Innocent World.

But all of that is just to give you some very basic background of what's happening in the scene over in the land of the rising sun.
Today I'd like to write about the latest fashion addition going steam: h.NAOTO with their h.NAOTO STEAM.

h.NAOTO has been around for absolute ages, it is generally one of the more visual kei type brands, and is known for it's collaborations with artists of all kinds of disciplines and most noteworthy musicians from famous Japanese brands such as LUNA SEA and X JAPAN.
It's not the first time that the label has delved into a different style of fashion, combining other aesthetics with their own typical look, as they have previously released lolita and aristocrat style/inspired sub brands GRAMM and FRILL.
So now there is STEAM as well.

It started with an announcement earlier this month on one of the shop blogs, a post on creator Naoto Hirooka's facebook and now the clothes are for sale on their webshop.

Now don't expect much typical victoriana style steampunk from this brand, which is the look most people associate with steampunk fashion.
Instead h. NAOTO STEAM is a mash up of visual kei and contemporary steampunk, historical elements are visible here and there, but they are mostly staying true to their original aesthetic and adding steampunk to the mix for a more ragamuffin type look.
Which is especially cool for those that simply aren't into clean lines and victorian elements.

It also proves that the Japanese are, much more than many western designers, very much unafraid of shedding the supposed "rules" (in as far as there are rules to begin with, but that aside) of steampunk fashion and make it a point of proving that one does not need to look victorian(eske) to indeed be steampunk.
Some of their things may look doubtful as steampunk garments at first glance, but think up combinations in your head, and then you'll realise they'd indeed work.

Even though most are pieces I personally wouldn't wear, I applaud this brand for making the step into steampunk all the whilst staying true to their own aesthetic in the process.
Hopefully more will follow suit, as I do believe that the unique view that the Japanese have will only enrich the global movement.

Antwerp Convention #4, we were there! With a stand!

On Sunday the 27th of April it was the fourth edition of the awesome Antwerp Convention, which took place at Antwerp's Antwerp Expo complex from 10am to 6pm.
Artifakt was there with a stand, our first ever, to inform those interested about steampunk and to answer all questions one might have had.
Many questions were answered, explanations given, shenanigans and good fun had by all and we loved both the experience as well as the convention!

Event review: Elfia Haarzuilens

Artifakt at TEDxFlanders' main event

On Wednesday the 26th of March the 4th annual TEDxFlanders main event was held in Antwerp, this time in the Stadsschouwburg.
Now for those unfamiliar with TEDxFlanders, it is the Flemish department, so to speak, of TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Technology.
It's an American non-profit organisation which is internationally present in several events spread over a multitude of countries in their TEDx happenings.

TEDxFlanders is basically a day full of people who are experts in their field that come and speak, providing information and inspiration to those present.
Coupled with an innovation market where you can test some of the latest creations in technological development such as camera carrying drones for aereal photography, the Oculus Rift which is a kind of virtual reality device, a new kind of music sharing, bug tasting (no we're not joking, and by the way waxmoth larvae taste like chicken) and of course socialise and discuss with others visiting the event.

Why am I writing about it here you wonder?

Well because Artifakt was invited to send two representatives in an advisory capacity for steampunk. Basically Bert and myself (Hilde) dressed in two different styles of steampunk and mingled with the other attendants.
People interested could address us and gain more information about the movement this way.
And if all goes well we shall be present again next year with more members and a proper set-up!
So that is most definitely something to look forward to!
We of Artifakt do, and we're very excited about it!





So if you are interested in new ideas and developments in art, science, politics and so much more (check this year's schedule to get an idea of the program) make sure you can make it to the event (or any other TEDx event near you!).
Ticket price is rather on the steep side, but it's really well worth it considering the wide variety, food and drinks are included as well by the way, so you do get a lot out of it for the price!

Event review: Made in Asia 2014 (MiA6)

Last weekend (March 14-16) it was Made in Asia at Brussels Expo in Laeken, Belgium.
Once again this Asiamania convention brought together a mix of music, culture, gaming and shopping in a designated hall of the Heysel complex.

Event review: Gala Nocturna

Last saturday, March 8, it was not only the warmest March 8 ever registered in Belgium, but also the date of the annual Gothic Gala better known as Gala Nocturna.

This year's theme was La Belle et La Bête, as you may have gathered already from the photo.
For the first time it was held in the Marble Hall of the Antwerp Zoo and even though it was a mostly Gothic event, several steampunks, amongst which several members of Artifakt, attended.

Artifakt meets J-fashion part 2.

On February 1st there was a fairy tale themed J-fashion meet in Antwerp.
Beforehand it had been made clear that steampunks would be welcome so several members of Artifakt took the invitation and joined (most of) the fun :)

Steampunk Hands Around the World

For those that wish to get involved in this project, of which the discussion is still ongoing on a special Facebook group as far as we're aware (just mail Kevin Steil to be included if it's something that you find interesting, or to get more information), so we are sharing it here for those interested.
Any initiative that is positive to steampunk as a whole is to be encouraged after all.
We realise that at the moment things are still pretty vague, but if you're interested in participating after reading the text below, from the Decimononic tumblr account (who are in on the project), don't hesitate to drop Kevin a line for more info/to find out how you can contribute.

"Just as current day expressions of steampunk are not limited to the literature where it began, the people in the steampunk community are not bound to any one geographical region. Steampunk appears in many forms, and with its popularity, the community has grown to encompass the world. The celebration and sharing of that global association is at the heart of a new project, Steampunk Hands Around the World, by Kevin Steil, the creator and editor of steampunk news and information resource website, Airship Ambassador.
With more than three dozen steampunk creators – bloggers, authors, event organizers, and others – also participating, the month long project is a multi format media presentation about the international connections and communications in the community, for steampunks and non-steampunks alike.
Beginning Sunday, February 2nd, and continuing until Friday, February 28th, the group will show and share that steampunks everywhere are linked together and that new friends are waiting in every conversation.

Steampunk, in its many forms, brings people together in an inclusive and helpful network of similar mind. On December 22nd there was a large (30+ people) Japanese fashion event, with a focus on Lolita fashion (although other styles were welcome too of course), taking place in Antwerp.

Artifakt being Artifakt and loving our (J-fashion) meet-up fun, several members ended up joining (by accident or otherwise) :)

Event review: Archeon Midwinter Fair

Past Sunday Marijke and I (Hilde) went to Archeon Midwinter Fair, accompanied by one of Artifakt's trusty air krakens: Candy Cane (aptly named, trust me on that).

This event is held annually in at the archeological domain of Archeon, in Alphen aan den Rijn in The Netherlands. We had so much fun that we've decided that next year it should be Artifakt's December outing. Whether or not we'll succeed remains to be seen, wish us luck :)

Afgelopen donderdag was het Internationale praat als een piraat dag. Of zoals het in het Engels cooler klinkt: International talk like a(n air) pirate day.
Natuurlijk lieten we die kans niet liggen en maakten we er onze maandelijkse meet van.

Het is bijna zo ver, de allereerste Dutch European Steampunk Convention, of kortweg D.E.S.C.

Van 4 tot 7 juli werd te het Parc des Expositions de Paris-Nord-Villepinte het dubbele extravaganza dat Japan Expo en Comic Con Paris is gehouden. Een ticket voor een van de twee verschafte toegang to allebei en beiden vloeiden nogal fel in elkaar over op het grensgebied tussen de twee, daarom is het best om ze als een geheel te reviewen. Wat ik dus ook ga doen.

Event review: Del Mundo - Maasmechelen - Belgium - 29-30.6.2013

Afgelopen weekend vond in de Maasmechelen Leisure Valley het jaarlijkse straat theater festival Del Mundo plaats. Op drie verschillende locaties gaven tientallen artiesten van over heel de wereld, allen heel verschillend, het beste van zichzelf prijs om bezoekers te entertainen door middel van hun acts. The Steampunk Objective was uitgenodigd om hun ding te doen in de straat van de Maasmechelen Outlet Village.
Het is geen grap, de Outlet Village komt neer op een parkeerterrein, bioscoop en dan een straat met langs beide kanten huizen waarin enkele restaurants, faciliteiten of outlet winkels zitten van chique merken, met een speeltuin aan het uiteinde.

Del Mundo festival Maasmechelen

Op zaterdag 29 en zondag 30 juni vindt voor de twaalfde keer het straattheaterfestival Del Mundo plaatst in de Leisure Valley van Maasmechelen.

Op drie verschillende locaties zullen tal van artiesten het beste van zichzelf geven.
The Steampunk Objective (en bijgevolg ook Artifakt) zijn eveneens present!

Ook al begint het festival slechts om 14u, de deelnemende steampunks zullen zaterdag al verzamelen om 11u30 in de Outlet Village. Als je gewoon wil komen kijken (al dan niet in steampunk, liefst wel natuurlijk) hoef je vanzelfsprekend niet vroeger te komen, maar als je effectief mee wil met de Artifakt groep moet je natuurlijk wel zien dat je er om 11u30 bent EN steampunk draagt (eenders welke stijl, naar aloude Artifakt traditie). Wel snel beslissen natuurlijk, want de plaatsen voor de crew zijn beperkt!

On Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of Juni the twelfth edition of street theatre festival Del Mundo is taking place at the Maasmechelen Leisure Valley.

At three different locations several artists will give it their best. The Steampunk Objective (and concequentially Artifakt) will be present also!

Even though the festival starts at 2pm, the participating steampunks will gather Saturday at 11.30 in the Outlet Village. If you just want to come to check it all out (wearing steampunk or not, preferably wearing the style of course) you obviously don’t have to come earlier, but if you effectively want to join the Artifakt crew naturally you’ll have to be there at 11.30 AND wear steampunk (any style allowed, as is our tradition). Be quick if you want to join the crew though, as places are limited!

Artifakt viert Internationale Steampunk Dag / Artifakt celebrates International Steampunk Day

Vorige week vrijdag was het gelukkig goed weer, wat geweldig was aangezien Artifakt een picnic gepland had om Internationale Steampunk Dag te vieren. We hadden natuurlijk wel een back-up plan, namelijk binnen blijven en in het uiterste stuk van het station te gaan zitten waar er altijd weinig volk is en we dus niemand zouden storen als het regende, maar zo ver hoefde het niet te komen.

In de plaats van naar het stadspark te gaan kozen we er voor om op een grasveldje vlak bij het station te gaan zitten.

In het "echte leven" studeer ik grafische vormgeving met een specialisatie in reclamekunst. Ik zit momenteel in mijn laatste jaar, met de jury binnen enkele dagen in het vooruitzicht (wens me geluk!).

Om het kort te houden, een van de dingen die ik dit jaar op school gemaakt heb is een lexicon over steampunk mode, in het Engels. Het omvat elke steampunk mode stijl, net zoals fotos en een bondige uitleg die daarbij horen.

Als je hem wil printen, en je mag er trouwens mee doen wat je wil zolang het maar voor persoonlijk gebruik is, dan raadt ik niet aan om dat thuis te doen gezien de kostprijs van inkt tegenwoordig ;)

In "real life" I’m a graphic design student with a commercial advertising specialisation. I’m currently in my last year, with my final presentation only days away (wish me luck!).

Anyway, one of the things I’ve made this year is this small lexicon to steampunk fashion. It’s got short explanations with every steampunk fashion style, along with some photos.

If you want to print it, you can, heck you can do with it as you please as long as it’s for your own personal use, I just wouldn’t recommend doing it at home considering the costs of print cartridges these days ;)

International Steampunk Day picnic - 14.6.2013

On Friday, June 14 we will gather in the old hall of Antwerp Central Station at noon.
If the weather is nice we go to the park, if not, we picnic indoors sur place in the far end of the station (where we won't bother a soul as long as we behave!).

To attend, please RSVP in a comment, show up on time (or notify a member of Artifakt that you will be late), bring your own drinks and something edible to share with everyone.
The dresscode is of course Steampunk, any style, even casual, is allowed!

Op vrijdag 14 juni zullen we verzamen in de oude stationshal van Antwerpen Centraal station op de middag (12u).
Als het goed weer is gaan we naar het park, als het slecht weer is blijven we ter plaatse en gaan we naar het uiterste eind van het station indoors picnicken (omdat we daar niemand lastigvallen zolang we ons gedragen!).

Om er bij te zijn gewoon even RSVPen in een comment, op tijd komen (of een lid van Artifakt verwittigen dat je te laat bent).

Breng je eigen drinken mee en iets om te eten om de delen met de rest.
De dresscode is vanzelfsprekend Steampunk, maar eenders welke stijl, zelfs casual, is toegelaten!

CD review: Victor Sierra "Yesterday's Tomorrow"

Het gloednieuwe 12 nummers tellende album van de Franse steampunk band Victor Sierra stelt zeker niet teleur en is zonder enige twijfel ook een geweldige aanvulling tot steampunk muziek wereldwijd. Met hun mix van rock, EBM, etnische invloeden en meertalige zang heeft Victor Sierra alweer een super album gemaakt en bewijzen ze nogmaals dat ze een originele band zijn. Niet enkel binnen de steampunk scene maar ook in het algemeen gezien.
  Ook al zijn ze afkomstig uit Frankrijk, toch zingen ze niet enkel in het Frans, maar ook in het Duits, Engels en Spaans, wat enkel detail en sfeer bijdraagt aan hun muzikaal verhaal zonder de coherentie van hun stijl en de organisatie van het album te breken.
Wat die organisatie betreft zijn de nummers zo opgesteld dat het niet uitmaakt of je ze nu in de juiste volgorde of shuffle afspeeld want ongeacht je keuze blijft je een choherent geheel van nummers behouden die toch elk zeer verschillend zijn. Niet enkel dankzij de taal van de teksten maar ook dankzij de toon, setting en effectieve arrangementen zelf.
De hoeveelheid oog voor detail dat de band heeft voor hun werk is verbazingwekkend en een eerbetoon aan hun kunnen en professionalisme.
Yesterday’s Tomorrow is een fantastisch album dat dankzij de diversiteit nooit gaat vervelen en alles heeft om een tijdloze steampunk klassieker te worden.
Ik kijk alvast uit om Victor Sierra de nieuwe songs live te zien brengen op D.E.S.C.13 deze zomer.



The brand new 12 song release of French steampunk band Victor Sierra certainly does not disappoint and is without a shadow of a doubt a fabulous addition to steampunk music worldwide.
With their mix of rock, EBM, ethnic influences and multilingual vocals Victor Sierra delivers another great full album and prove once again that they are an original band and not just in the steampunk scene, but generally seen as well.
Even though the band is French they sing not only in the country’s language but also in German, English and Spanish, which adds for more detail and flavour to their musical storytelling without breaking the coherence in their style and album line-up of the songs.
Speaking of said line-up, the songs are thus organised that you could either play the album in the right order so to speak or set it on shuffle and regardless of which choice you make you will maintain a coherent total of songs that differ from one another, not only by the language of the lyrics but also of the tone, setting and core arrangements themselves.
The amount of attention for detail the band has for their work is astounding, and a tribute to their skill and professionalism. Yesterday’s Tomorrow is a fantastic album that thanks to its diversity never bores and has all the makings of a timeless steampunk classic.
I look forward to seeing Victor Sierra perform the new songs live at D.E.S.C. 13 this summer.

Antwerp Convention

Antwerp Convention, wij waren erbij. Op zondag 28 april vond de derde editie van de jaarlijkse sci-fi, fantasy en horror conventie, simpelweg Antwerp Conventie genoemd (waarschijnlijk omdat ze zich realiseerde dat de oorspronkelijke naam te lang was), plaats in Antwerp Expo. Traditiegetrouw is dit altijd al de Belgische conventie geweest waar steampunk het best vertegenwoordigd is. Bij de eerste editie was het al zo dat we het grootste aantal steampunks aanwezig op een conventie in België konden tellen en sindsdien staat dat record nog steeds op de naam dit evenement. Zelfs al zijn we nog steeds met weing, zeker vergeleken met conventies in Nederland waar onze moedergroep The Steampunk Objective vaak aanwezig is, we komen er wel en zij die er waren hadden het fijn samen en dat is wat telt. Niet alleen waren alledrie de leden van Artifakt aanwezig, in elk een heel andere stijl van steampunk, maar ook Laurens, Glenn en Elles van Steamnation net als een aantal andere steampunks die waren langsgekomen voor het gebeuren.

Over het algemeen konden we vaststellen dat toch een goed aantal mensen interesse hadden in steampunk en bijgevolg werden we verscheidene keren aangesproken met vragen, die we natuurlijk met plezier beantwoord hebben. Het was ook fijn om te zien dat verschillende verkopers de moeite deden om toch ook waar voor steampunks te voorzien. Zelfs al was de keuze verspreid en niet zo heel groot, toch was er al een goede variatie en keuze uit pins, stripverhalen, t-shirts, tassen en zelfs bracers. Ik kan enkel hopen dat dit zich verderzet en groeit zodat we volgend jaar met nog meer zullen zijn op Antwerp Convention. Ik kijk alleszins zeker en vast uit naar volgende editie. Antwerp Convention, we were there. On Sunday the 28th of April the third edition of the annual sci-fi, fantasy and horror convention, simply known as Antwerp Convention (probably because they realised the original name was too long) happened at Antwerp Expo. Traditionally this has always been the Belgian con where steampunk was best represented. The first edition was at that point the one where we had most steampunks gathered on a convention and it kept on steadily holding that record. Even though the numbers are still small, especially compared to conventions in the Netherlands where our parent group The Steampunk Objective, is often present, but we're getting there and had a lot of fun together, and that's what counts. Not only were all three members of Artifakt present, in different kinds of steampunk, but also Laurens, Glenn and Elles of Steamnation as well as a bunch of other steampunks who had come to check things out. Generally we found that quite a few people were interested in steampunk, and thus we were approached several times with questions, which we were of course happy to answer.It was also nice to see that several vendors had done the effort to cater to steampunks and even though the merchandise was still few, there was a nice variety in pins, graphic novels, t-shirts, bags and even bracers. I can but hope that this continues to grow, and that next year there will be even more of us at Antwerp Convention. I am definitely looking forward to the next edition. Lilith Eden

Miss Lilith Eden, een jonge excentrieke dame die ook bekend staat onder de naam “Khaos Lilith". Ze houd een kleine, obscuriteiten winkel open in een kleine zijstraat in het centrum van de grote stad. Vaak is de winkel even duister als de roddels over haar afkomst, maar wanneer ze terug is van een van haar vele reizen staan de deuren altijd wijd open.  

Ondanks dat ze een jong volwassenen is (begin de twintig ergens, niemand is echt zeker), erfde ze de winkel van een verre tante toen ze net meerderjarig werd. Sindsdien houd ze het al enkele jaren open. Ondanks dat er veel geruchten gaan over haar en haar erfenis of beter gezegd, zij en haar tante. Want in al de tijd dat haar tante de winkel open hield is er nooit gesproken over een nicht die haar winkel zou erven als ze stierf op een van haar tochten op zoek naar curiositeiten. Pas nadat men hoorde dat ze gestorven was & haar testament werd nagetrokken kwam de nicht slechts een kleine week haar erfenis opeisen. Sinds die dag houd ze de winkel open, vanwaar de naam nu nog altijd “Et In Arcadia Ego” luid.

Maar naast alle geruchten en roddels die over haar de ronde gaan is ze binnen de stad bekend als de excentrieke miss Eden, die ondanks haar duistere winkel de grootste spraakwaterval is binnen de tavernes van de stad. Na haar reizen heeft ze naast al haar nieuwste schatten ook de meest grote verhalen over wat ze zag, meemaakte en vond. Waarschijnlijk kan het meeste met een flink aantal korrels zout genomen worden, toch is ze een graag geziene gast wanneer de latere avonduren zich indienen en men al meer opheeft dan men kan hebben.

De periodes dat haar winkel openhoud en ze in de stad verblijft is ze vaak gekleed in een mengelmoes van kleding en accessoires die ze overal vandaan gehaald heeft. Terwijl het de ene dag slechts een losse broek is en een korte top, kan het de volgende dag een wervelwind van rokken en sjaals over elkaar zijn. Toch is er één onveranderlijk deel aan haar attire: ze heeft telkens een (witte) lijn dwars over haar hoofd tot onder haar kin. Wanneer men ernaar vraagt waarom ze die elke dag opnieuw tekent, krijg je niet meer dan een glimlach en een schalkse blik.

Vaak zie je haar niet vertrekken of terugkomen. Maar als je oplet, in de vroege uren of diep in de nacht kan je haar soms zien. Vaak lijkt ze zelf een van de obscuriteiten dat ze verkoopt, gekleed in verscheidene lagen textiel, met veren hoofdtooien, haar haar in alle kleuren. Haar gezicht is vaak beschilderd tot ze amper nog menselijk lijkt of ze draagt een masker of sjaal dat de helft van haar gezicht aan het oog onttrekt.

Na haar eerste reis, toen een man haar de winkel had zien binnengaan en zij slechts enkele uren zoals altijd gekleed terug opende, vroeg hij haar of het nog een nicht was die men niet kende die op bezoek was. Haar enige antwoord was, met de schalkse blik in haar ogen die je enkel zag wanneer ze zich inwendig verkneukelde om een grap dat enkel zij kende antwoordde ze “Misschien wel, misschien niet”. Sinds die dag staat ze ook bekend als Lilith bekend als “Khaos Lilith”. De nog excentriekere Lilith Eden die je enkel ziet wanneer de wereld slaapt.

Dorian is afkomstig uit Dircalis, een overkoepelde stad waar in deze wereld Mechelen staat.
Hij verdiende zijn kost met het bewapenen van de bevolking, als bescherming tegen 'plunderaars' (een subras van de mensheid dat hun mentale gezondheid verloor door chemicaliën in de lucht buiten de koepel) en controlerondes te maken door de stad, tot spanningen tussen bevolking en politie voor strengere wapenregels leidden. Hij bevond zich aan boord van een van de vier Emtreinen op expeditie naar de meteoriet die voor al het onheil zorgde, bevond zich tussen de Carcanen (religieuze groepen mensen die de meteoriet aanbidden en magische krachten kregen door de chemicaliën in de lucht) en leerde van hen stukken van gedode wezens te combineren met achtergelaten technologie in de ruïnes van de woestenij, om daar nieuwe dingen mee te creëren om te overleven. Hij viel door een gat in tijd en ruimte en kwam hier terecht. Nu probeert hij zijn oude werk te hervatten in deze nieuwe wereld.
